Train Hard - Stay Humble

So far this year, I consider myself to have regressed, lacking the patience and ultimately courtesy I had 2 years ago. I'm not as confident, maybe not as eager, but I am still motivated to change this decline. I've read on societies that I admire, learned about Spartans (although disagreeing with many of their philosophies), Zulu's, Shaolin Monks (highly agreeing with all of their philosophies), Ninja and it all seems that they gather strength most from a kinship, training alongside one another. And I've always tried to better myself, following the one more independent approach I've learned from Samurai.I've wrote a list of habits to make and break over the summer, a list of 50 movies that build character to watch, and a pledge to take every day based off of Hippocrates and the 7 virtues of the Samurai. I've even become so obsessed that I've read up on fictional societies like the Sangheili (Latin for "I honor my Father's blood.") or Elites from Halo). I thought, the closest thing to one of these societies would be to join the military, and I certainly do not want to do the government's bidding. And a better approach, to join Yamakasi, which is even more difficult than joining the military perhaps. Finally, I'm stuck between many controversies in my mind.

If I become confident will I view myself as superior to others?
Should a traceur rely on independant strength rather than team strength?
Should I become a rather stiff person following all rules to better himself or be cool and laid back?
When I train should my mind be psyched up and confident or calm and focused?

After a month of these thoughts, I reached the conclusion; balance.
To choose a single side is much too radical, the ideal way to attain this discipline is to seek both confidence and equality, by independant strength and team strength, both rigid and disciplined and soft and understanding, both psyched up and confident and calm and focused.

So, does anyone else share similar goals as me? Because I am thinking of creating a well disciplined group to train alongside. To share and recieve goals and ideas.

Gene, every once in a while i run into some similar conflicts. if i see my self declining, i will find something else to build a bit of interest around-- kind of like the research you've done on different societies. even if it can be closely related to parkour, it's not a bad thing to separate it and grow in a different area and then find a way link the two (if that's one of your goals). but as apathetic as it may seem to just go with the flow and do what you do how you do parkour, it's been (in my experience), the best way to do it! although how i do and what i do with and for parkour, i'm plain happy with, so maybe that's because i've reached a point where my practice, training, and stance on parkour are what i'm comfortable with. sure every once in a while i'll try "fight for parkour's right" (and be even my own inner cheerleader) but other than that, i train in a way that's best for me as well as the community (i love to teach).

having confidence doesn't mean that you act superiorly, you're likely just be able to help others out more. just stay humble too.

i say, just have Makoto and Chungi, Gene and you will be fine.

...as you can imagine I have seen a lot of teenagers aging over my lifetime, and I have met many people in general, going through very different phases.

I can tell you that it's ok not knowing where to start in getting a grip on your life; actually that sense of confinement/unsatisfaction/void/non-understanding/etc. that you may have experienced, it's the beginning of getting that grip that you aspire to. Some people never experience it, some people learn to navigate through the bad weather, others get stuck, then they get over it, until they get stuck again... or not.

Truth is, the best you can do is doing the best you can; of course, not just thinking that what you're doing is said best, but really trying hard as you can and patiently waiting for the results to come...

Plan thoroughly, work accordingly, wait patiently... good stuff will happen.

The allegiance, partnership or incorporation in any kind of organization, institution, company, group or community has its pros and cons; the indiscriminate criticism of said participation has the only immediate result of breaking down communication between members/supporters and non-members/opposers...
Tolerance, openness and understanding are key to a successful communication, the first sign of which is respect.

agreeing with duperhero. joining military doesn't make you a dog of the government. anyway, in personal opinion i think parkour should be based of off personal strength. However, this inner personal strength can be acquired by training with other people and building confidence off of team strength. To me it seems you are over thinking the discipline too much and just need to relax your mind and train...

It seems to me that you're just trying too hard. Self improvement is no doubt an admirable thing to do, but you shouldn't be trying to change the essence of who you are. I agree with Duperhero; your conscience will do most of the legwork for you if you just listen to it.

And I also heartily agree with his bottom statement. That was quite an arrogant judgment to make, and I really hope you just phrased it wrong.

Maybe just accepting things the way they are is what should be done. I should stop trying to change everything so much, perhaps let it happen on it's own. It's just I feel lost all the time, I feel confined at school also. I guess the harder I try to get a grip on my life, the more immobile and suffocated it becomes.
