Event Description

Hey guys,

Dan Edwardes is coming in to visit for a short while next week and he wants to jam with us! He's going to be helping out at the youtube live event and they day after we're going to hit up the bunkers in SF and do a little session there. It's going to be starting at 11am.

PK Generations sessions are notorious for their intense warmup and conditioning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9Eh2kLwA7I

Anyway, it's bound to be fun, and it's an opportunity to meet a big name in parkour! I know it coincides with the regular sunday session, but if you'd like to come join us, everyone is very welcome!

Updated for less stupid image and date fix
I know there's a thing against pkgens from the pkna guys, but like Sin says, it's a different training op and you can learn from anyone. Also, if you have issues with his business model or whatever, this is an opportunity to ask/confront/fight him about it.

In efforts to keep this thread on the topic of the event itself, let's stick to the appropriate responses of attendance or non-attendance. I'll refrain from answering the questions and other things for now - let's talk about this a little next time we see each other in person?

I hereby drop all accusations/bad feelings, this isn't really a particularly big deal to me. It'll blow over after the event is over.

Alex is right... forums are a place to talk... after-training too, but this is just an event thread: people, IMO, people are entitled to say why they are attending or not and that's pretty much it;
please note that at a certain point questions started to be asked and opinions started to be challenged, instead of starting a new thread, which was probably more appropriate... that triggered a new unnecessary discussion.

On the other hand, "bashing" as another definition altogether ≠ stating one's opinion/reasoning, no?

You imply an accusation that has not been expressed, as well as support to a "cause" may be implied by innocently promoting its participation...

These are all details, IMO.

Eh. You're right.

I mean, I actually agree to some extent about the problems with business and pk. I just don't like that the opinions expressed included the implication that we are somehow in league with that sort of business model. Not that other people express their opinions.

Although I don't take sides, the offending parties "elsewhere" choose not to make their voices heard here, so while there really aren't very many differences in the approach to parkour, I'm putting some words down as another viewpoint, at least.

I think the ratio of talking vs training isn't a recent problem, but when we train, we're there to train, when we want to talk, that's what forums are for? Discussion's still important. But yeah, train more. Keeps your mind off this dumb stuff. We'll be out there for a short while at Berkeley this afternoon if anyone wants to join...

Respectfully.

Well, I don't think the event page is the right place to be bashing Parkour Generations...maybe we should create a thread for talking about parkour "companies?"

...Albert, just a innocent word of advise: don't get too offended by the predictably different opinions of others, when you are willingly exposing yourself to them; it's not worth it.

Some people do actually see PG as the new UFF (which some other still like!), only packaged in a more likable "kit", with Julie Angel's appealing video image.
Now: APK (backed by Crossfit) is in an alliance with UFF to bring "pk labeled" competition to the US, where the real television dollars are; PG got in an alliance with Yamakasi's ADD (they may want to re-brand that for the US, lol!...) to get an "exclusivity" on pk teaching certifications...
All the independent communities doing grassroots work, promoting safe progression, refusing competition, and avoiding idolization of members and national athletes get pissed...

...and you get a "little offended" because people state their mind? You might want to get some perspective...

If I may also: please remember that this site (not this community) exists because "elsewhere" people didn't feel comfortable (or weren't allowed) to speak their mind on these topics, in favor of a "goody-goody", "it's all good", "Viva Parkour!" (and "Freerunning", "Moonwalking", "Ropejumping", "Neckbreaking" -MY opinion!-) approach.
Here everybody can (respectfully) say what they want, which of course means some disagreements sometimes.

Anyway, who cares?!?
Go outdoor and train more (not "you", in general...), with whoever you want, and maybe talk less, on line and at training (a growing problem?)...

Respectfully...

Wish I could make this, but I'll be working. I agree with Sin that this would be a great opportunity to learn from someone whose skills I admire (just as I'm also excited to learn from Kaos, Aero, TK17 and others) and it's a chance to speak directly to someone who has a dissenting opinion (though not necessarily dissenting from mine in all cases).

"Regardless of how creators of this event may label it (jam, fun, community, etc.), the fact remains that it is meant to promote certain businesses (youtube & Parkour Generations)."

Kaos, I respect you and your decision not to go, but that's not fair. I'm just letting anyone who is interested know about the event and I honestly think it's going to be fun. While you may be completely right about his desire to profit and spread his whatever to us, I personally don't believe that anyone can get anywhere in parkour without actually enjoying the discipline. I think he wants to jam and see the sights and meet the people, at least IN ADDITION to his desire to stick bundles of cash into his pants. For the record, this has nothing to do with YouTube at all, and I hope linking to a video on youtube is not seen as a plug for the site.

The "creators of the event" is me. On SFPK's side, it's just jeff. We have no particular allegiance to PK Generations, and while we don't share the same animosity toward them, I just wanted to let you guys know about it, if anyone happened to be interested - ESPECIALLY if you have a beef against them, maybe this would be a good time to talk to them about these problems; no matter how much you dislike them or think they won't budge, this is a high profile business we're talking about. They're advertising and putting themselves out there. Complaining about them on forums is going to get the word to some people, but the majority of the world is going to be seeing what they're saying rather than what you're saying, so there's going to be a little more effort at confronting these issues if you want to change them. Please don't bash the messenger, I swear I'm not trying to advertise for anyone and I'm honestly a little offended.
