Thursday. Gym day. I hadn’t been planning to go, but I had something I wanted to talk to Cliff about and he suggested I come to his class that night. I still had the old directions I’d written myself in my car, so I hopped in and drove over to Culver City.
“I’m sorry, but the class is full.” The lady behind the counter looked disappointed for me. “You’ll have to wait and see if the coach will let you in. He isn’t here yet, he should be in just a bit.”
“Don’t worry,” I smiled, “I’m pretty sure I’ll be okay.”
I jogged upstairs turning into the room Cliff always started the class in, hoping the secretary was wrong and Cliff was sitting up there and just hadn’t checked in yet. No luck, but there were a few people from the class already waiting. I recognized none of them, so I gave a small nod their way and walked over to a chair on the other side of the room to cross my legs and arms and wait.
“What’s up, playa?” Cliff walked over and gave me a tight hug, after acting startled when he first saw me. I hadn’t exactly seen him yet since I’d been back, so this was our first time seeing each other in.. six weeks? :] He gave his parkour spiel to the class and we headed down to the mats. Rolls and Balances, not the most exciting class (which was why I hadn’t planned on going), but I seriously neglect my rolls, so I told myself I deserved it. King and Andrew were there as assistants. During warm up as King walked around to everyone with his fist out going “pound it… pound it… pound it…” he started when he saw me and said, “Whoa, you’re here!” I grinned and punched his fist. I hadn’t thought I’d be either, buddy.
After class a few of us stayed to screw around with the blocks and stuff. I have to admit the spring boards are FUN and I enjoyed leaping around with extra long kongs and dashes. “Come on, K to P,” King pointed at me as he set up the blocks. I cringed a little. “I haven’t really been practicing them,” I confessed, ashamed.
“They didn’t have you doing those up there?”
“Norcal!” Cliff reminded him. They’ve taken to blaming Norcal for any of my fuck ups :P
“Well, you’re gonna do some right now,” King said matter-of-factly. “Get on it.”
When the gym finally kicked us out around 11, we met up with Jo and SB to go out to eat. We went to a deli that had quite a selection and gave solid portions. It was a traceur’s deli :) I loved relaxing and chatting with these guys again, training hard and then getting good food. However, Cliff and King (and now Andrew too) never stop teasing me and screwing with my head. I don’t mind though cause I know they all have my back :P Cliff and I were highly mature through dinner, shoving and punching each other every few minutes. I was glad to see he missed me as much as I missed him. I think I’d mentioned to him once how play fighting is one of the highest levels of affection to me – I used to wrestle with my dad and sisters all the time when I was a little kid – and I think he remembered. If not, then he’s just really, really cool in my book :] After class in the gym we even did wrestle a little bit. I loved it. Wrestled with King too. My boys :)
We broke off around 1:45 am because people had work to wake up for. I never did get to talk to Cliff, but the night had totally made me feel all better anyway.
