From the late 1980s in Lisses, France and nearby, a group of friends and family transformed the games they played as children into something even more powerful. In 1989, to describe their activity, early members of the group would say: “je fais du parcours”, “I am following the course”.

Parcours was a term with special meaning for the first of the group, David Belle, because of its link to his father Raymond Belle (1939-1999). [1]

In Lisses, as with any town, a group of teenage boys might have been discouraged from running, jumping, climbing, vaulting and swinging around the place where they lived. But this group of friends had repeatedly shown humility and respect for their surroundings and other people. As a result, they were not discouraged from developing their practice.

By the mid 1997, the group had grown to include David Belle, Williams Belle, Chau Belle Dinh, Malik Diouf, Sébastien Foucan, Yann Hnautra, Guylain N’Guba-Boyeke, Charles Perriere and Laurent Piemontesi. This group had all adopted a new name for their movement-based practice: Art Du Déplacement, “the art of moving from one place to another”, which was suggested by Sébastien. The group was known as the Yamakasi, (Lingala for “strong man, strong spirit), a name suggested by Guylain. These names became known to a wider public during the group’s first broadcast media coverage on France’s Stade 2, in 1997.

Art Du Déplacement was also used to describe the movements of the seven Yamakasi who starred in the 2001 film of the same name.

As the founding members of the Yamakasi emphasized their diverse interests— including efficiency, utility, creativity and showmanship—other names came to the fore.

David Belle and others started using the term Parkour (invented by Hubert Koundé) in 1998, to describe parcours with a proper noun. Practitioners of Parkour later became known as traceurs [from "tracing": to follow, or mark, a path]. The term Parkour became known to the world with David Belle’s performance in the 2004 film Banlieue 13.

Starting with the 2003 documentary “Jump London”, Sébastien Foucan used freerunning as the means to describe the addition of creative movements, often drawn from a variety of other movement disciplines.

L’Art Du Déplacement continues to be used, and has come to represent a training method to (re)discover who you really are as well as to understand the mechanisms of the outside world.

Parkour is Not Done in the Gym

Cliff (CAK010), Wednesday 10 October 2007

Parkour is Not Done in the Gym.

The basic physical aspect of Parkour is about traversing the environment to get from point A to point B. This is true for any environment be it urban or rural. The obstacles are those that we encounter in our surroundings and on our paths. These obstacles, both man-made and natural, are built/created with an intent that is appropriate for its surroundings. A tree provides for our ecosystem, a wall is used to separate sides, a rail is used for support, etc. These obstacles are obviously not put there with the specific purpose of having people train Parkour even though they may be utilized by a traceur in her journey to point B. In fact, it is the ability to get passed and utilize these obstacles that helps define a traceur.

Many of us have found training inside a gym with pads, foam blocks, spring floors, etc. to be fun and a luxury of sorts. In fact, training in gyms has become very popular recently as more facilities become available and open to our types of drills and techniques. Moreover, those just starting out will now look to receive instruction in a gym before attempting actual Parkour outside where it is meant to be done. As a result, lots of people who are a bit more experienced find themselves teaching Parkour classes inside gyms. I am one of these people. I have been holding gym sessions and classes for a while now. I've seen many people come and go. Some people understand it, progress, and then train outdoors. Some attend a bunch of gym sessions or classes, but never go outside. Too many people come to the gym once, then never show up again after having "tried it out." I've even dealt with media people who want to do a news piece about Parkour with only having been to a gym and not outside. I've also found some gyms starting Parkour classes that are taught by gymnastic coaches who don't actually do Parkour. I'm seeing a very bad trend develop that looks to be leading toward confining Parkour to gyms and/or specific facilities.

Parkour is not done in the gym. It is not a gym activity. The basic physical aspect of Parkour is about traversing the environment(urban or rural) to get from point A to point B. Parkour is not gymnastics. Parkour is not tricking. Parkour is not a sport. Parkour is not something that can be understood or experienced by going to a gym. Our surroundings and environment are not pads, foam blocks, or spring floors. One cannot move buildings, angle a tree, soften concrete, or raise a rail the way one can with the gym equipment. Parkour is not about manipulating the environment to suit you. It's the other way around. You learn to adapt yourself to be able to traverse the environment. The gym is unable to provide this. One can drill techniques and set things up to build strength, body awareness, and agility in a gym, but it will never be the outside. There will always be that difference that defines what really is the physical aspect of Parkour.

To understand Parkour, one has to go outside. To be able to begin to describe Parkour or even report it, one has to go outside. To be a traceur, i.e. someone who actually "does Parkour," one has to go outside. When I hold my gym sessions and classes, I make it a point to explain to the participants that they need take the strength and knowledge they've acquired and go outside with it. Simply vaulting some foam blocks or jumping the balance beams means nothing in relation to Parkour if you can't take it outside. That's not to say it's useless, but its just not Parkour.

Many of us first learned the physical aspects of Parkour outside a long time before getting to play in a gym. It is said that the best way to learn something is to do that thing. Training outside is the best way to learn Parkour as that is where it is really done. By training outside, I was able to progress physically as well as mentally and emotionally. My overall understanding of Parkour became clearer.

Many people are afraid to train outside. This obstacle is easily overcome with a little intelligence. Being smart about your limits and training appropriately is key and not difficult to do.

I write this to build awareness. Don't let yourself get caught in this wave of gym popularity without also training outside. It's okay to go to the gym, but realize Parkour is done outside of the gym. Be wary of people advertising gym sessions and classes who don't encourage you to leave the gym to train outside. Often those people are just looking for money. Training outside is FREE! Also, if you run any gym sessions or classes, make sure you constantly encourage participants to train outside. Parkour is about utility, progression, and durability. It is about traversing your environment. It is not about what you do in the gym. So go outside and train!
BApk Session Organizer's Workshoptag:baparkour.ning.com,2012-08-28:2070047:Page:1048892012-08-28T04:58:42.168ZChrishttps://baparkour.ning.com/profile/kaos

The goal is to teach people a process that they can use to teach themselves or others. This process includes breaking a movement down into smaller more attainable goals, building on those goals, and then linking the pieces together. Everyone progresses at different rates, so be prepared to assign specific tasks to people who may need an extra step in their progression. A thorough instructed session contains several elements: warm up, drills, progressions, games, feedback, and cool down.
Dear BApkers,

after almost 5 years of regular Sunday trainings for beginners (which are also back-to-basics sessions for more experienced traceurs), in 2012 we decided to experiment with a new formula for scheduling training locations by (1.) repeating the same training location twice in a row, while (2.) at the same time planning the whole month in advance.

As…

Dear BApkers,

after almost 5 years of regular Sunday trainings for beginners (which are also back-to-basics sessions for more experienced traceurs), in 2012 we decided to experiment with a new formula for scheduling training locations by (1.) repeating the same training location twice in a row, while (2.) at the same time planning the whole month in advance.

As we all know, the purpose of the Sunday sessions is to work on fundamentals and caters primarily to beginners and to newcomers looking for a welcoming introduction to the discipline and the community.

With that in mind, BApk organizers and coaches have reassessed the following:

- repetition is necessary when learning new skills, allowing for linear progression and a better learning experience for each technique;

- coming back to the same spot, and revisiting specific obstacles, is a good way for beginners to make goals and deepen their focus, by trying to achieve what they couldn't accomplish the previous week;

- for a more experienced practitioner, going to the same spot back-to-back allows him/her to look for new lines, different type challenges, and even just experiment with the same movement in a new light;

- repeating and scheduling sessions for a whole month will make it more predictable and reliable for newcomers, who are still trying to understand what are their options in terms of training.

While we completely understand and appreciate the need to maintain training fresh, which make beginners come back, helping them build a desire to keep learning, as well as offering a certain degree of variety to experienced practitioners and organizers, in order to keep up their motivation and desire to give back to the group, we deem that this new formula will be beneficial to the organic growth of all participants and of the community as a whole.

Also, it will keep us from manically trying to use all the cool stuff in a location at every visit.

:)

Of course we are also familiar with the possible issue of "overstaying our welcome", and we'll react accordingly, if for any reason we may deem a location not suitable for repetition, because of the risk of being too conspicuous, or because of any other logistical complication (public works, other organized event, weather, etc.).

So, please support as much as possible the organizers in this new scheduling, by arriving to training reasonably on time, participating to the warm-up (a fundamental part of training, which will improve your performance while keeping you as injury free as possible), and keeping an energized, positive and creative attitude throughout the training and its repetition.

Thanks, train hard and stay safe!

It is a training method to strengthen mind and body alike, to
teach your body to do things it couldn't before, to teach your mind
to be open to the endless possibilities the world offers, and to
work within a community which believes that, no matter what the
in". The best thing about Parkour is the way you feel when you
practice, train, and learn.

1st Massive West Coast Jam a huge success... to be
repeated!

During Memorial Day weekend 2009 BAparkour and PKCali joined forces
to bring as many West Coast communities together for a regional Jam
in San Francisco.
We invited traceurs from Southern California, Washington, Oregon,
British Columbia and of course the whole Bay Area with the goal of
establishing a stronger bond throughout the West Coast.
On Saturday, May 23 we hosted an all day session spanning five
locations including WWII bunkers, a wooded trail run, park
playgrounds and school campuses.

Following the wrap-up of this very long and fulfilling
week-end:

Around 11:00am on Saturday we gathered more than 55 initial
participants for the sign up at Battery Godfried overlooking the
Golden Gate bridge. PKCali showed with a strong representation of
15+, while traceurs from Sacramento, Santa Rosa, San Jose and even
Washington State were present.
They all joined the 10 local guides, who were ready to split into
smaller groups of 20/25. That was planned, but also required by the
only meeting with authorities of the day, when two cars of park
rangers approached us (after spotting the only professional
cameraman "attending" the event...), and notified us that a
permit was required within the GG National Recreation Space for
groups bigger than 25...
So, while regretting not doing a speech and a collective warm-up at
the opening, we started dispatching groups to the spots right
away.
Some had a blast doing massive quadrupedal courses through the
winding trees at Mountain Lake Park. Others had fun tricking on the
grass, while people kept on joining in, filling the ranks of the
few that left early (lots of first-timers to big jams).
At any given time we estimate 80 traceurs training, with a strong
traceuses representation. A close by elementary school provided
good rails fun, while after transferring to George Washington HS
campus and regrouping all, we indulged in some serious
follow-the-leader runs, burning out all the remaining fuel.
At about 5:00pm we were ready to party with a big barbecue,
frisbee, soccer and a gigantic PDQ game, many Capoeira 'rodas' and
some MMA jamming at Golden Gate Park.
A last vault box thrown on the grassy meadow kept on tempting the
50+, who hung out until sunset...

In conclusion, it was a tremendous successfully 1st MWCJ edition,
which costs were entirely covered by participant donations and
was possible through the help of all the many people offering
food, rides, cooking, hospitality, etc. (a huge thank to <a href=
everyone!). Thanks everybody for attending and giving us all the
best you had.
No doubt we will repeat next year, when PKCali will "pick up the
- All Tutors will introduce themselves at the beginning of
- All, Tutors and Minors must sign a waiver and
acknowledgement of BApk liability policies (<a href=

- All Tutors and Minors must provide emergency
contacts, with a name and phone number.

Custody of the Minor:

- BApk is not responsible for the relationship between any
Tutor and Minor (sibling, friend, parent,
community leader, family friend...) once they have both
declared to be "together" for the purposes of the jam;
- It is the responsibility of the Tutor for clearing
'tutorship' with Minor’s Legal Guardian (Parent,
etc.);
- BApk has no way of verifying legitimacy of custody, and cannot
act as a law enforcement in any way.

Ultimate responsibility:

- Ultimate responsibility for Minors rests with their
Legal Guardians or Custodians.
- Legal Guardians must be aware of the action of the
Minor in their care at all times.
BApk welcomes and encourages parents’ participation or
attendance to trainings and jams!

From it's inception in April 2008, BApk's community website has been based on an online networking 'platform' called Ning, which used to be provided for free to online users.
In 2010 Ning deemed their business model unsustainable, and decided to start charging their users -from August 2010-, or face closure. BApk organizers, administrators and moderators decided to stay with Ning, in order to a.) preserve all the invaluable content collected through the years, and b.) show their allegiance to a local (Palo Alto) business, which helped BApk take shape as an online community (after being already a vibrant, local, volunteer-based organization).
At this time, this means a cost of $220/year.

For now and partially, this has been covered with old excess income from BApk T-shirts sales, but of course we could use the help of everybody.

Aside for maintaining the website, your donations would go toward making BApk training sessions safer and more enjoyable.
You can help us make our community better by supplying first aid materials, ice-packs, food, water, supplies for obstacles, and more!

And we got away of those annoying Google Ads!
:)

Money, is not the only way to help: if you can't donate, consider supporting and giving back to the community differently...

Dear BApk members,

We would like to inform you about an upcoming event that may shape
the public perception of our discipline. This may affect current
practitioners in their daily conversations about parkour, but more
importantly it will affect the mindsets of would-be practitioners,
general public, media and authorities. If you have been with us for
a while or have read through our documents, you already have a good
idea how we feel about this. However, rather than preach to you…
Dear BApk members,

We would like to inform you about an upcoming event that may shape
the public perception of our discipline. This may affect current
practitioners in their daily conversations about parkour, but more
importantly it will affect the mindsets of would-be practitioners,
general public, media and authorities. If you have been with us for
a while or have read through our documents, you already have a good
idea how we feel about this. However, rather than preach to you we
thought it best to give you the details so that you can make an
informed judgment.

This month production begins on a MTV television series called "The
Ultimate Chase" that will attempt to portray parkour and
freerunning. As the title describes, the series will set well known
practitioners (Danny Illabaca, Ryan Doyle, Oleg Vorslav) as well as
lesser known practitioners (Brian Orosco) against each other on an
obstacle course. "The Ultimate Chase" which will be introduced by a
one hour special will feature both man vs. man and man vs. course
events.

The show is the brainchild of a few entertainment professionals who
formed the "World Freerunning and Parkour Federation"
(WFPF) by signing athletes from around the world who were
trying to break into the entertainment industry. Televised obstacle
courses have been around for some time, but this rebranding for
English audiences will take advantage of the popularity of the
disciplines of parkour and freerunning. The WFPF claims their
competition remains true to the philosophies of both parkour and
freerunning which were founded and defined as non-competitive
disciplines.

While their audience will consist largely of non-practitioners, the
WFPF has worked closely with practitioners to form a palatable
marketing strategy for the existing community. It is their position
that competition is the inevitable future of a discipline which is
practiced by tens of thousands world wide in a non-competitive
fashion. While this may seem illogical, their position comes into
focus when considering the money involved. It is virtually
impossible to make money off of parkour in its current
non-competitive format. It cannot be argued that a competitive
format is more lucrative. This 'inevitability' stance has
been trumpeted for the past several years only by those interested
in profiting off the community (i.e.: Mark Toorock of APK, and Paul
Corkery of UFF), but was shot down by a global movement which
popularized such slogans as "Pro Parkour, Against
Competition" and "Competition is not inevitable, it is just
another obstacle!" To further satisfy the non-competitive
community the WFPF claims all competitors will strive together in a
communal fashion. However, they diverge from the community theme
when they claim on their website
to be a "Federation for the teams". The global parkour scene
is not made up of teams, which are generally viewed as a means to
further careers in the entertainment industry, but rather
all-inclusive communities that foster the utilitarian parkour
philosophy.

While the WFPF has taken a direct page out of the APK/UFF playbook,
they are not collaborating with the two organizations since initial
discussions turned sour. Both APK/UFF and WFPF camps claim the
opposition is taking advantage of their athletes. Although some
WFPF signees are rumored to be unhappy with their contracts, for
those willing to partake in a competition labeled as parkour the
partnership with WFPF seems like a step in the right direction in
terms of safety. The industry professionals will be using the UFF
Barclaycard competition as an example of what not to do. At the
aforementioned event there was only one medic on site when an
athlete was seriously injured, and required emergency treatment.
The entire event had to be put on hold until the medic returned to
a jeering crowd and uneasy participants.
Here is the first press release from the WFPF. Hopefully you
feel we gave you some intelligent insight on this upcoming event,
and can make more informed decisions about it.
