Personally, I became a traceur because at this point in my life there are obstacles and challenges in my way that I simply can't find my way around or a solution to. I feel like parkour is not only a physical, tangible way for me to express this, but also a way for me to develop a certain mental state and amount of confidence and courage that'll help me overcome the struggles that I'm facing right now.

Whenever I tell somebody that I've started practicing and doing parkour they're always like: "Oh man! So you're gonna be doing all that crazy stuff like jumping off buildings and flipping off walls! That's so cool! You're gonna look so awesome!" Although I crack a smile from their enthusiasm, I always tell them that I'm not doing it to look cool, or to be like Spiderman, or to even build more muscle to make my body look better. Instead, I tell them that I'm doing it for my own self-improvement; that I'm doing it to be more helpful to myself, to others, and to more evenly balance out my life.

I guess it's easy nowadays for parkour to be misconstrued as stunts or tricks for those who aren't familiar with the philosophy behind it, but I think that if all traceurs make it a habit to speak of parkour from a more philosophical and mental standpoint then I think it can be spread in a more healthy and reputable manner.

Personally, before I even made the definite decision to become a traceur, I read up on EVERYTHING I could about parkour, from it's history and development to it's philosophy and precautions. I even made it a point to read up on things like first aid, diet, and other health concerns. I think that if leaders and more experienced practitioners within the parkour community direct beginners towards these subjects it'll definitely become more than just what people see or do, but what people think about and believe. Thank you.tag:baparkour.ning.com,2009-02-22:2070047:Comment:393422009-02-22T04:42:28.103Zhillexallenhttps://baparkour.ning.com/profile/hillexallen

Very well written, and a lot of good points. :)
I've just started, and have been coming across videos that show people jumping off buildings and do dangerous stunts, and for a while, I assumed Parkour was all that.
Luckily, I've ran across sites, like this, that what to keep the true philosophy of Parkour. :)

Hey, thanks. I have seen some of the haters on the larger forums, and I understand that we don't need to defend it. I will definitely check on the thread once in a while and clear up any misconceptions if there are any.
You can monitor what the larger community thinks about this post here. Kirill and Alex, you should keep in mind that there are often 'haters' on these larger boards. There is no need to defend what you wrote to them.

When I made my quick trip to SF, there were only of handful of traceurs that I truly enjoyed training with. Alex, you're one of them (sorry Kirill, we never got the chance to meet). You're a positive young man and I hope you continue to train hard and remain dedicated to the preservation of parkour's image.
Love from NC.
